Carole Jenkins

Title of work: 'Maker Church at Dawn'

How Shapers were used:
Carole began by painting the sky, having mixed the colour she wet the paper with a dropper and then pushed the water around the sky area using a number 10 Angle Chisel (soft) Colour Shaper®.

Then the colours were added in turn moving down the paper, pushing and pulling the paint around using the same shaper.

Once the paper was totally dry, Carole painted the sea using a number 6 Flat Chisel (soft) to pull the blue from the horizon downwards. Then Carole continued with the house and church using the same shaper - with the tip held horizontally pulling the paint down for the house and church building; but holding it vertically and pulling the paint inwards towards the centre of the tower.

The hedgerow was produced using a number 6 Taper Point (soft) Colour Shaper®, and the road was painted using both the number 6 and the 1 ˝" Flat Chisel shapers. The same shaper was used for the trees, first laying in vertical blobs for the trunks, then dragging paint from them to form the branches. For the fields Carole used thickly mixed paint and found it really easy to produce the texture she wanted with the Colour Shaper®.

This was Carole's first attempt at using Colour Shapers® for the whole work having only used them previously for masking fluid to save her brushes. Carole says that she found that she was able to paint much faster using Colour Shaper® and that the shapers made her paint more freely and really loosened up her style.

A final comment from Carole, "I thoroughly enjoyed the experiment. The shapers made me think about what I was doing and made me modify my style. I look forward to using them for watercolours again."
